Mary Beth explores the meaning of “heart” for John Duns Scotus as our deepest self, our inner center where our identity is found; deeper than emotions and passion. Our hearts have a two-fold desire:

 

1: Affection for happiness - to have all we need. This is our natural disposition and is focused on ourselves in a healthy way.

 

2: Affection for justice - to love and act rightly. This is our free and creative disposition; it is ordered to love as God loves.
